Self-introduction - Ed Luna (Fukuoka)

Hi all!

I’m Ed Luna, now presently in Fukuoka, Japan, and have been since 2018. My native language is (American) English (boring, right?), but here are my other languages:

C1/C2: Indonesian, Balinese
B1/B2: French
A1/A2: Japanese, Korean
Looking to explore more on: Javanese, Navajo, Kawi/Old Javanese

I’m originally from the US (San Diego, California), but have spent more than 10 years abroad, first in South Korea and now in Japan. I specialized in Indonesian during my undergraduate years as a contact language for my later doctoral linguistics work in Balinese (which was at UC Santa Barbara), so with most of my Balinese friends on medsos (media sosial ‘social media’), I speak a mixture of Balinese and Indonesian, like most Balinese do. If you’re wondering how I got into the Balinese language in the first place, I have been a practitioner and proponent of Balinese and Central Javanese gamelan music and dance for nearly 30 years now (!), so my interest in Balinese language naturally sprung from my interests in Balinese performing arts - and those two disciplines are tightly linked in many ways.

This year I will be giving an introductory workshop on the Balinese language, so I hope to see you there.

Ampurayang titiang dumun saantukan kayun kenalan dumun, inggih. Wastan titiang Ed Luna saking California, AS, lan sampun malajah basa Bali suwe pisan. Yening wenten makeh iwang titiang, sugra dumun. Ainggih, asapunika dumun.

Looking forward to speaking with and answering questions from you folks in about a month!

It’s an interesting journey. Currently, I’m learning Korean too!

Bienvenu !
