Language Documentation

Hi everyone! I’m Kristen, Programs Director at Wikitongues. If you haven’t heard of us or worked with us before, we are a non-profit creating and providing the tools for language sustainability. One of the main cornerstones of our work is recording and archiving oral histories: as of today, we’ve recorded 1, 149 videos in 602 languages. And we would love to continue adding to that!

If you’re interested in submitting a video (or know someone who might be!), you can read more at www.wikitongues/submit-a-video or send me a message - I would be happy to talk further :grinning:

I would also love to talk to anyone working on a language revitalization, just to hear what you’re doing and future plans :sparkles:

What inspired you to learn Udmurt?

I used to be at INALCO(institut national des langues et civilisations orientales) in Paris at ADEFO(association d’étude des langues finno-ougriennes) et ils organisaient des “journées udmourtes”, et oon eu la possibilité de suivre un mini stage(oops in English they organised mini stage)

Hey Kristen!
I’ve known about wikitongues for a while and love what you guys are doing.

I’m documenting a language in the Caucasus Mountains called Tsez (iso:ddo). I’m actually working with an understudied dialect which some believe should be considered a separate language entirely. I’m also the executive director of a new organization called XRI. We are creating language technology for low/zero resource languages in many parts of the world among many other things. We should set up a meeting!

I know a number of people in the Russian Federation who research endangered languages such as Mansi or Nanai. It’s very likely they have made videos suitable for Wikitongues or can easily shoot some if asked. I doubt many of them speak English, but you should be able to communicate with the help of Google Translate.

Please let me know if you are interested and then I’ll ask around.

Hi Daniel! I attended your talk the other night, but wasn’t able to stay on for the question session. I would love to set up a meeting and hear more about your research & XRI. Can you send me an email at kristen@wikitongues.org?

Thanks! Talk soon

That would be fabulous! I don’t speak Russian (or any language used in Russia, for that matter), but we have many people on our team who do. Thanks, Olavi! My email is kristen@wikitongues.org.
