Hello from Luxembourg

Hello everyone! I’m Christine from Luxembourg. I had the fortune to grow up with 3 languages: Luxembourgish, French and German. I also learned English, Spanish (both C2) and Latin (very rusty by now) in high school. I’ve been obsessed with languages for as long as I can remember, which is probably why I decided to study translation. I’ve been working as a freelance translator, specialising in legal translation, since 2006.

I’ve also taught myself Italian to an advanced level (C1), have a semi-decent level of Dutch (B2), forgot most of the Russian I learned ages ago (A2) and I’m currently working on getting my Mandarin Chinese to HSK level 3. I know bits of Indonesian, Portuguese and Catalan and hope to have the time to study them more seriously one day, in addition to the dozen or so other languages that are tempting me. The Polyglot Conference is definitely not helping with my linguistic wanderlust :smiley:

Hallo Christine, wie geht’s? Luxembourg ist meinem Herzen nah weil ich da mehrmals gewesen bin, als ich in der Eifel wohnte. Ich erinnere mich an sehr schöne Wanderungen in der Nähe von Echternach. Ich finde es auch toll, dass es so Multi-Kulti ist. Einmal war ich in der Stadt Luxembourg in einem Restaurant und ich übersetzte für meine Eltern vom Deutschen ins Polnisch. Und auf einmal hat uns die Besitzerin gesagt, dass sie Polnisch kann. Sie war Luxembourgerin verheiratet mit einem Polen und sie hat Polnisch gelernt!

Hello.

I have always been fascinated by countries like Luxembourg because of their multilingualism. Which languages do you use for translation work?

We kennen elkaar allang van HTLAL, ik was daar Fasulye. Kijk maar eens in de Nederlandse thread ik heb daar een afspraak gemaakt voor vrijdag om met 2 anderen een uur Nederlands te spreken, mocht je het niet druk hebben met werk ben je hartelijk welkom bij ons!

Ich wohne nicht weit von Echternach. In der Eifel ist es auch sehr schön, meine Oma kommt aus der Gegend.

I translate from German, English, Spanish, French and Luxembourgish into French and Luxembourgish, mostly from German into French though and quite a lot from French and English into Luxembourgish also.

Ja, ik herinner me nog goed aan HTLAL. Bedankt voor de uitnodiging! Ik weet nog niet of ik tijd heb, deze week is heel druk, want ik nog aan een andere online conferentie deelneem, maar als ik tijd heb kom ik graag. Ik heb deze zomer een intensieve cursus Nederlands voor Duitstaligen bij de Universiteit van Amsterdam (online) gedaan. Het was heel interessant en ik heb veel vorderingen gemaakt :slight_smile:

Stimmt’s, die Eifel ist auch sehr schön! Ich wohnte in Bad Münstereifel im Kreis Euskirchen, and jede Woche haben wir eine Wanderung in der Gegend gemacht. Ich habe sie so geniessen. Woher kommt deine Oma, wenn ich fragen darf?

Hi Christine, it’s nice to know that there is some interesting in Luxembourg in the Polyglot Conference. Is this your first time attending?

I am from Luxembourg too. I attended the conferences in Japan and Slovenia and as far as I know, I was the only person from Luxembourg there :wink:

I was at the very first Polyglot Conference in Budapest back in 2013. Unfortunately, conflicting schedules have always prevented me from attending the other ones.
I also attended the Polyglot Gathering in Berlin in 2016, where I gave a talk about multilingualism in Luxembourg and the Luxembourgish language, which was quite fun.
