My name is Elise and I live in the Netherlands. I’ve always been interested in languages but it wasn’t until after I had been to China and got into Mandarin Chinese that I knew just how much. Before, I had only been dabbling with several European languages, but was never dedicated enough to actually get somewhere with those. While they are still intriguing to me, Mandarin Chinese is something else entirely. It really triggered my fascination towards the complexity and beauty of languages.
My language journey has just begun, so as of now I only speak three: Dutch, English, and French. I can also read and understand Mandarin Chinese on toddler level (peppa pig gang anyone?) but my writing and speaking skills are nonexistent so in my eyes that doesn’t count just yet. In the future, I would love to pick up Cantonese, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese, Mongolian, Spanish, Italian, Romanian, Georgian and a Scandinavian language. It’s so hard to make a choice with all those beautiful and interesting languages out there…
This is my first time on the Polyglot Conference, I am really excited to here and hope to make friends with those who share the love for languages!
Thank you! I’ll just say it again that I’m really excited to be on here! I see you have many Eastern European languages on your profile, that’s awesome! I love Eastern Europe, especially Romania
Hello @elise1 It’s so great to see someone so interested in so many Asian languages, especially East Asian languages. As an East Asian and a fellow Asian languages lover, I feel happy and very excited to see Europeans learn these languages and I know it is really damn difficult! Enjoy your time here
Where have you been? Personally I still have so much to see, but that’s only an exciting prospect to me. I have been to Romania, Ukraine and Hungary and really can’t wait to see more! Western Europe is all cool but at the end of the day I am way more into Eastern Europe.
Hi! Yes I just never knew I was into East Asian languages before actually going there, haha! I am really impressed with all the languages you speak. It inspires me to keep going so that I might, someday, also be able to speak all these fascinating languages!
Serbia! I had a glance at it once as I was on a Romanian train. It was riding right next to the Danube for quite a while, and on the other side of that river was Serbia! Really wanna go there as well, Bosnia and Bulgaria are also pretty high on the list
