Greetings from Winnipeg

Hello everyone,

I’m happy that we are doing more of these conferences online. I was looking forward to the combined LangFest and Polyglot Conference event in Mexico, but in lieu of that I’m happy that we all get to come together virtually online. LangFest 2019 was a good time and I hope that I can see some more of the people from that event in this one.

For my day job I work as a climate simulations programmer in Winnipeg, creating various models for predicting changes in climate and the outcomes of extreme flooding events. When I’m not doing that, I am learning languages. I started my language learning journey when I was learning how to speak French because I wanted to come to Canada for continuing my studies and I understood that French speaking was an asset. I ended up falling in love with the process of learning French so much that I am trying to continue that process with as many languages as I can. I speak Spanish and German to a phrasebook level: I understand basic phrases well enough to get by in countries where both languages are spoken, but I lack the capacity to have deeper conversations as of right now, and I have an interest in also learning Russian, Japanese, and Estonian.

Look forward to the online conference, and I hope that it will be a good time.

Cheers,
Ryan Spies
