My name is Piotr, I’m Polish, but I have spent significant amounts of time (5+ yrs each) living and working in Tehran and Tel Aviv (which is where I live now) as well.
I am here because I immensely enjoy learning languages and learning about languages (and their speakers!). My areas of special interest are lran (in broadest possible sense) and Caucasus, but I’ve also been reading up on dozens of other ‘uncommon’ languages.
During the conference I will be talking about Lezgi, a Nakh-Daghestanian language with speakers of which I have been in touch (on and off) since 2002 or so. I’d be happy if you chose to listen. In my opinion Lezgi is a fascinating language to learn and contact with its speakers can be a very rewarding, enriching experience (as it has been for me!). But even if you’re not interested in Caucasus, I think some of the observations I tried to include in the talk might be applicable to current situation of several other minority languages as well.
Instead of listing the languages I “know”, I thought sharing my future plans will be more entertaining:
Planned certs: HSK5 (or whatever corresponds to it in the new system; I passed HSK4 in Feb 2020); TEG B1 (that’s cert in Irish); DALF C1 (but that has been on the ‘to-do list’ for so long that I doubt I’d ever get to it)
Current distractions (ie. linguistic “side adventures”): Adyge, Bambara, Chechen
Recent distractions (to which I may return): Northern Sami, Songhai, Tamajaq, Tamil

Cześć Piotr, cieszę się na twojego wykładu! Interesuję się bardzo historią Irana i regiona Kaukazu, ale nigdy nie sprobówałem nauczyć się język z tej części świecie. Może we przyszłośći - teraz skoncentruję się na językach słowianskich, szczęgólnie Polski i Serbski. Przepraszam za blędów - niewątpliwie zrobiłem kilka!
