"Not my mother tongue" play list

Moi aussi! I’ve been addicted to Québecois traditional music for over 30 years, practically raised my son on it! You posted one of my all time favorite tunes by Le Vent du Nord there… J’adore “Au Bord de la Fontaine”.

And way too many to note from La Bottine Souriante, but this oldie but goodie is a family favorite:
La Ziguezon

I really love the acapella singing of Les Charbonniers de l’Enfer:
Along with this very silly chanson a repondre…
Frank You

And this one too:
Au Diable les Avocats

I’m wondering how this thread escaped my notice for two weeks but it has been great fun going through it now! :grinning:

Sadly, songs that aren’t written in English get virtually ignored here in the UK but if you know where to look, once in a while you get to see a singer who plays in front of thousands of people in their own country play at a much more intimate venue (except for Jay Chou, who filled the O2 Arena with thousands of East Asian students and only the odd - speaking for myself, obviously  - westerner) with hardly any Brits in the audience and feel like you’ve been transported to Paris, Berlin, Kraków or even Shànghăi for the evening!

So, I’ll limit my list to singers I have seen in concert in London and pick songs with lyrics that are hopefully not too hard for intermediate learners of each language to understand:

:cn: Chinese: 周杰倫 (Zhōu Jiélún = Jay Chou) - 告白氣球 (Gàobái qìqiú)
:de: German: Nena - Geheimnis + “?” (Fragezeichen)
:clipperton_island: French: Francis Cabrel - La Fille qui m’Accompagne
:clipperton_island: French: Étienne Daho - Bleu Comme Toi
:clipperton_island: French: Jean-Jacques Goldman - Comme Toi
:clipperton_island: French: Calogero - Voler de Nuit
:clipperton_island: French: Laurent Voulzy & Alain Souchon - Oiseau Malin
:poland: Polish: Edyta Geppert - Czy Pamiętasz Jak To Było?
:es: Spanish: Francis Cabrel - Cosa de Equilibro
:portugal: Portuguese(ish): Étienne Daho - Saudade

I had to be creative with the last two languages in order not to break my ‘seen them in London’ rule - one is a French song sung in Spanish and the other is French but its title is based on one of my favourite Portuguese words :grinning:

Jeeee these are all amazing recs! I maintain a Wikitongues playlist every year (“every” as in this year and last year, so not really too much of a tradition yet :upside_down_face:). I went through and added as many of these as I could to our Spotify playlist. If you’re interested, there’s 8+ hours worth of music on here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5nrVQrbqLUNPduxvJJXTUX?si=n4OXTXc9SyOHPJts50IkXw.

Thanks everyone for an exciting upcoming week of working from home :musical_note:

I heard about the national lockdown in France - sorry about that. I know we have already had enough with all other covid-related restrictions in place.

I suppose the USA will be next with all the cases surging like crazy.

Good news is we will have all the lovely people here to talk to. And love your play list by the way! I am big fan of Xavier too

Not My Mother Tongue . A playlist I intend to update weekly with 7 new songs not sung in English (at least not in full), giving you a chance to explore … An example of mother tongue is English for someone born in America . The language one first learned; the language one grew up Core Ball with; one’s native language. The language spoken by one’s ancestors. In this metaphor, language is seen as coming from your primary caregiver, the person who looked after you most when you were young, and traditionally this was mothers . So, this is perhaps the point of origin, the starting place,of the metaphorical phrase, mother tongue
